Do you give money to tramps/the homeless/beggars
Whatever they're called these days.

Personal preference obviously, I never used to but in this shocking weather we've had recently, I think what's a handful of change to me if it helps someone out. It's an interesting ethical question.

I always wonder how many are genuine though. But by same token another part of me thinks surely no-one does it for fun.

Cashless society must've really hit their takings in recent years though, they should get on contactless.

That brings him into Sullivan's price bracket; he ticks the age box, he ticks the crap box.

Expect a bid any time soon, followed by, "Well, we tried but couldn't meet his wage demands".

You might need to give any spare change to Carlton Cole soon judging by news stories that he may be declared bankrupt soon!

So we're all going to ignore the fact that Bushey goes around offering a foot long to homeless people?

This place has changed.

And not for the better.

I left the missus and the baby, ran back and offered to buy the fella breakfast on my card in Subway.

He declined.

Clearly wanted cash to spend it on other things... Like the vast majority of them do. If you were starving, would you turn down a foot long BMT, cookie and a coke

So, having read about fake arm injury guy, and feeling a bit of a spaz for dropping him a Lady Godiva a few years back, I did a little reading up and am happy to report I'm far from the only soft touch out there:-

Re: Do you give money to tramps/the homeless/beggars
While travelling in India I was on a 3rd class local train out exploring a random part of the country. It was packed to the rafters and very difficult to get through the carriage when I felt a tug on the bottom of my trouser leg. I looked down to see the shocking sight of a begging leper missing an arm and a leg, with his one leg twisted half way round and his one wrist and hand all bent up and misshapen, dragging himself along the floor on a shitty old skateboard begging for anything he could get.

As this was about as far removed from a tourist trap imaginable I quickly gave him a few rupees and he continued on his way. It was interesting to see most of the locals were also finding some coins to give him when they were all quite poor, so I had no reason to doubt him.

The train began pulling away from the station when a bit of an outrage shout went up further in the carriage and got louder. I looked out of the window at what people were pointing and shouting at and there was the begging leper, up on two feet - suddenly with both legs fully functional, both arms and hands completely normal, bandages removed from his face and trotting along happily, wearing quite a smart blazer with his skate board tucked under his arm. I've seen a lot of my travels but that really blew my mind!

There’s pages and pages about him on the internet.

That guy frequents Hamilton Hall on a regular basis. Number of gullibles that give him money is quite funny.

There's an easy way to weed out the con men

If you get within range and can't breath from the stench they're genuine.

Had a similar experience near Liverpool Street staion a few years back. Young bloke staggers up to us (me and my Son's Kiwi girlfriend who I was showing around the City) and says he's fallen off his bike and need money to get to hospital (Homerton iirc), proceeds to pull up his jacket sleeve to show the torn up forearm - very impressive. Even though I had a strong suspicion it was a rort didn't want to appear heartless so gave him a couple of qui and off he trotted looking for the next mug. Several days later he stopped me again - solo this time - in Old Street. All he got then was a smile and a chuckle.

When they walk through the tube carriage spurting their spiel, the first thing I think is. If you don't have any money how did you get on the tube?

Re: Do you give money to tramps/the homeless/beggars
I have been known to...

However... I'm always skeptical.

I took the Missus to Brewers Tavern for Mothers Day Brunch.

As i came out there was an English homeless fella asking people for money for food as he was starving. I had no cash on me, just cards. I walked off and i was thinking it's fucking freezing, felt really sorry for him.

I left the missus and the baby, ran back and offered to buy the fella breakfast on my card in Subway.

He declined.

Clearly wanted cash to spend it on other things... Like the vast majority of them do. If you were starving, would you turn down a foot long BMT, cookie and a coke?

But to answer the question in Brussels there's homeless who open the doors for you to the ATM area in the bank. I usually give to them. They are at least trying to do a service and quite the entrepreneurs.

In Paris they come onto the Metro and begin by telling you their life story before coming round for money. But I don't give to them. It's never a believable story. Well the bit I understand aren't..

Re: Do you give money to tramps/the homeless/beggars
I had a flat rigfht in the city centre of brum where the main area is and had quite a few out there.

One day I see one guy and he said he needed 25 quid to get on his feet and get a hostel for a week. So i bought him a coffee and said id meet him later and walk him down there and pay for it for him.

He didnt turn up and was out there often saying the same thing. He didn't want help.

I used to talk to quite a few and when i went out would make them a Coffee and drop one off to them or a pizza or some food

Never gave them money though
